In Groningen, August 28th is celebrated as a public holiday and thanksgiving because of the arrival of the French troops in 1795, which puts an end to the commemoration of local historical events. In the early 19th century, the tradition revived to celebrate the “Freeing of Groningen” (Gronings Ontzet). The tradition has been maintained so far and is celebrated with activities and fireworks in the city of Groningen.
